Notre Dame High School, Belmont, traces its beginnings to the Gold Rush era schools started by the Sisters in San Jose in 1851. In 1923 it was moved from San Jose to the William Ralston estate in Belmont. The present building, completed in 1928, was planned for both boarding and day students – and with a swimming pool, an amazing innovation in those days.
Notre Dame continues the legacy of California's pioneer Sisters and offers its students college preparatory programs. The school gives its students an educational foundation which emphasizes academic excellence, spiritual growth, critical thinking, creative expression, physical well-being, social awareness and self-confidence.
But for the Notre Dame student, school isn't just study, it also includes sports, working on the school newspaper, yearbook or literary magazine, performing in concerts and plays, tutoring other students, or joining a student club. Students also find time for community service. The Notre Dame Community Service Program seeks to instill in students a love of service for others and aims to challenge and inspire students to live out the Gospel values through a commitment to social justice, compassion, and respect for the dignity of all persons.
Today 445 young women fill Notre Dame High School's classrooms and hallways.
