Sister Anne Christine Barry, SNDdeN, a Sister of Notre Dame for 73 years, died August 12, 2010, at age 91. After graduation from Moreland Notre Dame Academy, Watsonville, Anne Christine followed her heart and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history and brought her own good energy and joy to her years as an elementary school teacher, principal and supervisor in Notre Dame schools throughout California, Oregon and Washington.
Sister also served as education supervisor for the Sisters of Notre Dame and in the Office of Education, Archdiocese of San Francisco. Retiring from educational ministries after 51 years, she worked at the Development Office of the Sisters of Notre Dame and at Insyte with long-time friend, Sr. June Canoles SND. Sr. June shared this unique story about Sr. Anne Christine’s calling, “Anne was galloping her horse on her father’s ranch when her horse shied and threw her over his head. She saw herself flying toward a clump of bushes and in the bushes she saw the face of St. Julie! Anne knew she would be saved and that some day she would become a Sister of Notre Dame.”
In 2003 Sr. Anne Christine moved to the Notre Dame Province Center in Belmont and continued volunteering. She believed, “The Lord and good friends always help you out.”
The daughter of John and Anne Barry, and sister of Jack Quinn and Kay Driscoll (all deceased), she is lovingly remembered by nephews Steve, Tom, Mike, Brian, John, and niece Molly and by her many former students, friends and her Sisters of Notre Dame.
