Statement on the Derek Chauvin Verdict

This is both a somber moment as well as an opportunity to break through this cycle of death. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in the United States are committed to work with others to address systemic racism in all our institutions as well as in our culture so that we may all live together in a society that is respectful of the dignity and worth of every human being and is just, moral and safe.

As a nation, we witnessed the video of the arrest and wrongful death of George Floyd and have followed the subsequent trial of Derek Chauvin and now have heard the jury's verdict—guilty on all three counts. We pray this verdict will give some form of comfort to the Floyd family and a sense of justice in this tragic situation. We remain aware of the impact of systemic racism and gun violence, and we commit ourselves to effective action to address injustice.
